For this month’sVideo Challenge , we take you to flirt with video recording setback – rearwards playback . What did we see ? You ’re obsessed with coffee and the parole “ love . ” Of of course , coffee made it to the final exam while love did not .

shoot on Panasonic GH1 at 60fps , conformed to 24p , edited in final cut professional . Shooting the coin was challenging- shutter speeds , shallow depths of athletic field , and different frame rates were all interesting variables to manage while shooting with rude light . An elusive subject , it made for a fun shoot .

Here I am , once again submit a coffee - theme Gizmodo Challenge entry . I ’m clear obsessed . I bump rearward video a great style to exhibit a mental process in an interesting way , particularly when unite with time remapping and a single cut of meat . A great mint of footage can be throng into a very curt amount of metre , while still appropriate emphasis on the most interesting region . The terminal merchandise is featured first in the video , followed by the process of its world , terminate by putting the total thing in context . The cognitive process in this type was the creation of my morning coffee cappuccino .
The stave at Comet Coffee here in Ann Arbor was nice enough to allow me behind the counter with my tv camera before they opened on Saturday forenoon . The intact appendage was captivate in a single take , originate with a supporter filming another champion walking into the shop class . He transcend the photographic camera over to the tabulator to me ( wait at the immediate payment registry ) , and I filmed over the barista ’s shoulder as he made a cappuccino from beginning to end .
Initially I design to take this on a Canon 7d for its more exonerative deepness of field and extra slow 60 fps , but it was n’t able to handle the low Inner Light of the former morning . I ended up filming on a Canon 5dII , using the fantabulous 24 - 105 F4 / L double stabilized , along with a Zacuto Z - Finder and Target Shooter . preferences were 1600 iso , f4 , 30 frames per second , and 1/30 shutter speed . Editing was done in Adobe Premiere Pro CS5 , and people of colour grading was done with Magic Bullet Looks . Just for the track record , permit me say that time remapping a single 2 instant clipping like this is a incubus in Premiere .

Reverse Engineering
I want for my video to annul the action without countermand the time continuity . To do so , I decided to shoot all my scenes in black eye and re – invert them in post . Obviously the spinning top conception was only invert once : in Wiley Post .

The video recording of the hourglass , the light up , the light down and the smoke was shot with an iPhone 4 . The Candle time - lapse part was shot using Canon EOS 40D , with a 20mm / F2.8 lense .
I used my iPhone as an intervalometer for the 40D , with the DSLR Camera Remote app .
The iPhone video are in 720p and the meter - lapsing was spare with a lossless resolution , so I have a somewhat big video recording of 36 seconds ( approx 10Go ) @3888 * 2592 . My computer was really crying during the rendering process .
All the prison term - lapse images were work on with Adobe Photoshop Lightroom to make the background signal look like an untouched iniquity , I used Premiere Pro to turn back , put all together , and make pan & zooms on the time - lapse part … The outcome was pretty astonishing .
The knockout part for me was to find ideas , it ’s actually pretty hard to ideate something lift without using dull - gesture , and since I do n’t have the necessary cloth , I decided to make a time - backsliding .
The taper for me was the skillful room to make something unusual , like something that is build from scratch by the blast .
The hourglass acts as a video progress - ginmill , but transposed . I wanted to play with gravity and fire .
I also need to mention every piece of computer hardware and software system that allow for me to make this happen : Apple for the iPhone 4 , canyon for the 40D , ononesoftware for the iOS DSLR Camera Remote , Adobe for Lightroom and Premiere Pro . Was n’t sure what to do for this challenge ; film muckle of footage of bowling , the computed tomography and the woodstove . In the thick of skim - coating my kitchen , I make up one’s mind to do some color test for possible wall handling . And I thought that seeing the paint cabbage off the drywall could look neat . 45 minutes of shooting and a few time of day of editing after , this is what i came up with .
It ’s O.k . Originally was cut to run 1:45 , but after being sped up , does n’t go quite as well . Something funny about the aiff I export from the MIDI file cabinet makes the soundtrack get trimmed instead of delivery shift . I had fun cause it irrespective . Not sure I ’ll end up using those colors in the kitchen . Nikon D7000 w/ kit 18 - 105 @ ISO 500 , various aperture .

Chasing Smoke
First of all , I bugger off ta say do n’t fume . It ’ll kill ya dead ! There was a lot of trial and error involved in shooting this . Getting the cigarette to burn the right way was an issue and then processing it at a gamy enough settlement was a whole other problem in itself because of the deficiency of random access memory in my information processing system . I resolve to go with the cigarette because I want to capture something glow , I figured the results of the cigarette regenerate from ash tree would be pretty telling . I was surprised to see how much the coffin nail move around upon windup of the video . I go for you enjoy it . Thanks for watching .
