After 19 long years, the physics sandbox title based onHalf-Life,Garry’s Mod,has been granted permission to use files from Valve’s other titles. The game originated as aHalf-Lifemod and let players use assets from the game to create virtually anything they want, from new maps and game modes to entire movies filmed in-game.

Over time,Garry’s Modhas expanded to include assets from Valve’s other titles, likeCounter-Strikeand theHalf-Lifesequel. However, although the game is now a standalone title, it required players to own at least one Source engine game, andcertain assets needed fans to have specific titlesowned on Steam in order to load.

In a new update shared on the officialGModwebsite, developer Facepunch Studios has announced that this is no longer the case. As of this update, players will no longer need to own any Valve titles for their assets to load.

Garry’s Mod Finally Has CS: Source & Half-Life 2 Assets

Anyone Can Now Use These Assets Without Owning Either Game

The update states that “With gracious permission from Valve,“players can now use assets fromCounter-Strike: SourceandHalf-Life 2inGarry’s Modwithout needing to own the titles.

It’s worth noting that the maps, voice-over files, and music from the games aren’t included, and that players will still need to own and have the games installed in order to use these assets. Still, even with these limitations, the update should resolve most cases of missing textures and contentcaused by missing game assets.

This is a huge moment for the sandbox title, and a nice gesture from Valve for freely allowing the game to use its game assets.
