Kevin Smith ’s sequel to the classicHe - Man and the Masters of the Universe‘80s cartoon is an first-class ( and frequently shameful ) show , andBear McCrearyis part of the reason why . The composer , who ’s scoredThe walk Dead , Battlestar Galactica , and so much more , was a massive MotU fan long , long before he work on Netflix’sRevelation , but that did n’t make his chore slowly . In this exclusive interview , McCreary explain the trouble with the classic root song , what made him scream , and the “ laughable amount of study ” it take to wreak He - Man back to life .

Rob Bricken , io9 : countenance ’s just start with your chronicle with Masters of the Universe . Were you a fan spring up up ?

Bear McCreary : I have a middling extensive history with the blade , actually . I think Masters of the Universe might be the first fictitious universe that I dove into . I am the accurate age of the demographic that I think MotU was designed for — tied for first place , peradventure , with Star Wars — but there ’s no question that it was Star Wars and Masters of the Universe . When I was three to five [ year old ] , those were my determinate toys and my fabricated existence . I had the books , I determine the cartoon . I was bear in 1979 . So that means that by the clip the Dolph Lungren [ 1987 Masters of the Universe ] picture came out , I ’m what , eight ? So it had a substantial magic to it . And in many ways , it was one of the absolute , define gateway into phantasy that would probably tempt the media I would ingest as I got older , when I became a more discerning audience extremity .

io9 : I could have almost allege that verbatim . I was born in ‘ 77 , and MotU hit me in that seraphic spot too . So what ’s the charm of Masters of the Universe to you ?

McCreary : For me , it is a gateway into a couple of genres , which I recall is really cool . It has a alone mix of fancy and science fiction . As I got older , I really get down into hard sci - fi , novel , and pic — matter likeAliensandBlade Runnerand all that kind of hooey . And phantasy , particularly Conan the Barbarian , Lord of the Rings , Willow , that form of stuff . If you think about it , Masters of the Universe really draws from , and in some ways influence , a peck of those thing . I think for me , what I care is that in a very unique way MotU exists in this everlasting balance between two genre that do n’t of necessity have a fortune in common and boils it down . There ’s legerdemain and there ’s technology , and they really are equally balanced .

io9 : If you ’re busy , I could possibly just publish this interview for you myself . I feel the precise same way .

McCreary : [ laughs ] I wager ! Yeah , I can palpate it just in talk to you . I mean , I think everybody has fond memories of Masters of the Universe . It was just one of the things in the ‘ 80s . But for people born between 1976 - 81 , it mean something else to us . It really is profoundly influential on us because we are the 1 that never saw it as a corny or hokey affair , we only saw that looking back . But when [ I was ] four , Masters of the Universe was the cool thing I knew .

io9 : We have a really strong memory of what the show was which is very different from what the show really was .

McCreary : Well , precisely . And I am certain I am jumping ahead of you in do a question you ’re hold up to ask , but I draw on the look [ while making Revelation ] you ’re talking about . We have this feeling of what Masters of the Universe is in our hearts , and that is very much the show that Kevin and Netflix and Mattel made , and it ’s very much the score that I wrote . Without instantly referencing the show , [ my grade ] more reference the way we finger about our show and I think Revelation come closer to capturing that in an actual visual medium than anything else I can think of .

io9 : Yeah , it ’s interesting . There have been so manyadult reboots of these classical franchisesand usually , they ’re just grim and gritty . But it really astound me how well Revelation bridge the disruption between the show we saw as shaver and the show we ’re experience as adults .

McCreary : I appreciate hearing you say that because that ’s exactly what everybody was going for , and I share your wonder for what the writers and Powerhouse [ Studios ] created . I think , not to lessen my own contribution to it , but the visuals and the book and the performing all existed before I got regard , and they really did line up this incredible balance . And it ’s definitely not a reboot . But it appeals to people that have aged since the last time they see it .

io9 : It was being billed as a sequel for a prospicient time , which confuse me — like , how do you make a subsequence to a show that never had serialized story to continue , and has mature really badly , unless you ’ve got nostalgia for it ? But when I interpret Revelation , I empathize how the show could make do both thing .

McCreary : Yeah , it really can , and I think they did n’t break canon in any ways that are significant . Instead , I find like they assume the implied story from the classic Filmation serial and interpolate them out , and expand upon relationships . I ’m biased , obviously , but I intend this is one of the more proficient reimaginings or continuation that has come out in decades . I mean , I guess about other smash hit [ series ] from the ‘ 80 that care they could do what this show is doing with their brand .

io9 : It ’s staying true to our nostalgia in a way that I ’ve not project anyone else manage to pull off .

McCreary : I think part of the grounds they were capable to do it is it was the good combination of political program and budget , meaning there were n’t $ 200 million dollars on production and $ 200 million on merchandising being spent . So you could take some risks . You make out what I intend ? Then you had Kevin [ Smith ] , who the creatives swear , the executive director trust , everybody trusts , and he protects the estimation and that ’s what you need . You demand someone that will allowhis actors , his committal to writing staff , his composer , his animators to kind of come to the table and say , “ Oh my God , this is my dream project . This is what I want to do . Please protect me from electronic internet notes ! ” And he did .

io9 : I sing to him late , and it sounded like Netflix hold him in a corral of what they consider what was and was not He - Man , but they give him free rein within that . What that the same for you ?

McCreary : Absolutely . And it is deserving sound out that the proverbial internet notes , I do n’t conceive were a big issue on this show . I recollect that Netflix was fabulously supportive , and I would say that my experience likely mirrors most people [ who worked on the show ] . I feel like they got all the right hoi polloi in , and when you have the proper person who ’s incredibly passionate , you just need to kind of check that they ’re heading in the right focal point , and then let them do their affair . It was an implausibly collaborative experience but also I get at this affair running 100 mile an time of day and was devote a lot of freedom to do the score that I ’ve always want to hear .

io9 : Where do you begin scoring a show like this ?

McCreary : Well , in my first meeting with Kevin , and Rob David from Mattel — before I was charter — I had n’t even seen anything , or scan anything from Revelation . I sleep together nothing other than they were making a new show . But in a unearthly way , I already knew what I want to do . I was n’t really auditioning for the line of work , it was more like , “ I ’m going to tell you what I desire to do . And if that scare off you , I ’m not the guy for this show . Like , literally do not engage me because I wo n’t do anything that fits . ” And I go talking about the influence that I always want to have and all of us were instantly on the same page .

When I said that , I did n’t really need to cite the music from the Filmation show . I know that the report birdcall is beloved but beyond that , the score is so dated and of its time . I told them , “ I desire to make the musical score that I feel like I think [ from the show]—the score that would make me feel like a small fry again . ” And for me , that ’s referencingConan the Barbarianby Basil Poledouris , which I ’m going to say is the greatest fantasy film score of all time . My idea was , what if Basil Poledouris had hired other ‘ 80 Metallica to be in the orchestra when he score Conan the Barbarian ?

Skeletor, triumphant.

io9 : Wow .

McCreary : So it ’s Conan the Barbarian . It ’s Ivan Reitman ’s Heavy Metal movie , that form of vibe . And I basically enjoin , “ If that is not exciting to you , then we ’re not go to work well together . ” Instantly , Kevin starts singe the love theme from Conan , and I look him in the eye and I say , “ Kevin , I ’m going to have to do your show now . ”

The next step after they hired me and I was capable to watch the episode and really abide how epic the story is , and I saw how well - save it is and well - performed it is , I realized I need a bunch of characters [ themes ] . And the literal challenge with the first installment is that it ’s sort of like a season last for the ‘ 80s iteration of He - Man and the Masters of the Universe .

Ugreentracker

io9 : I had n’t thought about it that way , but you ’re absolutely veracious .

McCreary : It really is . The challenge there is , in a time of year finale , Man - at - weapon show up and you play his motif . Evil - Lyn is there and you play her theme . Teela takes her tiara off and you wreak her idea . You just get snippet — you do n’t get big reveals , you do n’t have big origin stories , you just have these moments . And I realized that I needed to have all those root in station in the first episode , even if you only try them for a few seconds . So among those themes was a radical for Adam and He - Man . I had a composition for Skeletor , human race - at - weapon system , Beast Man , Battle Cat , Evil - Lyn , Orko , Grayskull — those are all in the first 12 minutes . And then a few other themes trickle in as the show goes on , but basically , it ’s all there .

I had map out the entire show , where I was lead to take all these theme , what they were going to do , where they were going to evolve , and I had to publish them all at once . Which was a derisory amount of oeuvre , to be good with you . It was months of figure out what all these different themes were , just so that I could quote them for a couple of seconds . It ’s just that they give off in adult ways as the show unfolds .

io9 : What about He - Man ’s shift sequence , specifically ?

McCreary : After I ’d done all of that work , I was able to enforce [ He - Man ’s composition ] into thetransformation episode , which I thought was the best agency to sort of demo out this idea of the symphonic orchestra - meets - big metallic element kind of phone . I want to write a melodic theme that really fit our new adaptation of Adam ; I had always envisioned this heroic fanfare pose on top of a Metallica Riffian , and if you heed to the scene with that in mind , that ’s kind of what it is . There are these heavy grooving guitar and celli and bass play this Riffian that is very iconic of He - Man . Then there ’s this very heroic root word , which is fairly traditional . I ’m not strain to break the mould here .

I wanted to write something that feels very cinematic , but that also has some stratum and some subtlety . And this is ultimately why , to suffice your question that you have n’t asked , did n’t I use the onetime version ? The reason is I found the old theme is so innocent , and so vestal , and so distractingly nostalgic , that it get down to take by from the emotional impingement . There ’s no better example of this than in the end credits of the first episode , where we ’ve listen this heroic He - Man theme until the end , but then it fundamentally plays like a funeral . It ’s a solo French car horn play that uplift flourish that I wrote for He - Man and Adam , set against these ominous drums that are soak in reverb , like they ’re far away , like you ’re watching a military funeral . I ask a melody that had a certain black bile to it , that had a sealed iniquity to it , because ultimately [ Adam ’s ] secret destroys human relationship . It shatter the world of our character . The innocence is lost .

That [ classic ] subject represents innocence , not only to people at our age but even just on a technological level , a harmonic and melodious level . It ’s so happy and uplifting and exciting that I just find it was n’t going to fit . I know there are break down to be fans that take issuing with that and for them , I say that I love that old theme as much as they do . I initially could n’t guess the show without it . But once I really wrap my caput around Revelation , I realized that the music needed to tell this story needed a dissimilar kind of main theme .

io9 : Building a model inside the report that could represent that eventual darkness sound like a real tough phonograph needle to thread , especially since the show start so guiltless and reminiscent of the classic ‘ LXXX serial publication .

McCreary : Yeah , [ but ] multiply that times 10 because every lineament has that ! This is sort of like a spoiler - y consultation , ripe ?

William Duplessie

io9 :   Yes , through the first five episode .

McCreary : So we assemble Orko . He ’s doing his former Orko clobber . He ’s doing a witching trick , and it goes awry , and it very much plays like the Orko that we cognize and call up . The musical theme that I wrote for him is a bullseye for that . Then , at the end of episode one , he shows up in a heroic context and actually tees up an arc that play out over more episodes . That same theme that was goofy and comedic , [ then ] had to play strong and heroic . I wanted it to be a real reiteration of that theme . I really wanted even insouciant audience extremity — perchance it takes them a wake or two to piece together that every time Orko shows up—[to realize ] it ’s the precise same theme that earn you kind of roll your eye and laugh on the first scene but gives you an epinephrine burst on his 2d view . From there , it continues to evolve — that was hard . It was not easy to get that milage out of a theme . That ’s why I spend months writing themes , and I would just seat with them . “ The funny version works . But can I make that emotional ? [ No , ] that does n’t run . ” So I had to go back to the beginning and attempt to find a way to be able-bodied to recite the story .

io9 : I knew you were break to cite Orko ’s scene . I can not block think about when he opens up to Evil - Lyn . I could n’t think I was watch a show where Orko had commiseration and it worked .

Starship Test 9

McCreary : And it works !

io9 : I think of , Orko was bothersome even back when we were youngster because he was unfunny amusing respite and always mess up things up , which was frustrating . But all of a sudden , in Revelation — even before he has his huge , grand moment — he ’s speak about his feelings and doubts and fear , and it truly touched me .

McCreary : Yeah , and the scene in episode three when we bump him in humans - at - implements of war ’ hut and he ’s sick is another knockout . I did n’t even cite Stephen Root ’s speech as Cringer in instalment two , when Teela ’s go to turn her back on being a grinder . I ’m getting chills even think about it . It ’s so great that all these fiber that were very prototypic in the ‘ 80s — Cringer is called Cringer because he ’s a scaredy - cat — that the show gets to explore them without basically changing them . That ’s the brilliant thing . Cringer ’s still Cringer , it ’s just that the writers come up with condition that would push all of these characters beyond their limitations and force them to confront thing emotionally that they never had to in the honest-to-goodness show , which really makes it feel like they ’re still the old characters . They ’re just exploring novel side of themselves , and we ’re able-bodied to see that . There are just some wonderful eccentric moments .

Lilo And Stitch 2025

The funny thing about the show , and this continues into the [ subsequently ] episodes , is that every instalment have best . That means the first sequence is literally the worst one — and it ’s big — but they just get better and better and better and I think that ’s the sign of a great creative squad that is n’t scared of getting notes or frightened of audience expectations and just run for it . That ’s the originative environment I like to feel .

io9 : Well , in term of defying audience expected value , the end of instalment five is especially outrageous .

McCreary : That ’s the one , dude ! I called Kevin when I was done writing episode five , and I think I was crying . I narrate him , “ This is one of those scenes that I ’m going to remember the residue of my lifetime . ” I got to score that . And I feel like that so rarely . I consider it is well - executed and scandalous and beautiful and I get chills just thinking about it . That ’s a gift you’re able to give a composer , a fit like that .

CMF by Nothing Phone 2 Pro has an Essential Key that’s an AI button

io9 : mouth of outcry , how did you finger when Kevin Smith post the video of him tearing up while watching the shift vista paired with your sexual conquest ?

McCreary : It was pretty amazing . Normally a composer announcement is among the last things that ever happen . I just suppose Kevin and Netflix and Mattel were genuinely jazzed when I post that first translation cue stick and the main title that made the protracted prologue that opens the first episode — those are the two cue that I sent first . There was a lot of enthusiasm there , which was expectant .

io9 : Well , I think the Venn diagram of adult He - Man rooter and people who are excited about Bear McCreary score make a single circle .

Photo: Jae C. Hong

McCreary : [ laughs ] It get to what I was enunciate , where it ’s so uncommon that you work on a task and you just feel like every single mortal you ’re working with was support to operate on this affair . reckon , I ’m very fortunate to be in this spatial relation . A lot of composers would love to score this and a lot of them would do a keen job . But I also feel like when I got the call , I felt this almost this overwhelming sense of “ I was bear to do this . I ’ve been thinking about this since I was four . ” I almost finger like I could help other people understand why we like He - Man and it was n’t ironical , you know ?

io9 : Absolutely .

McCreary : I baffle to work on aStar Wars biz for Oculus . I love doing Star Wars stuff . It ’s bully . But there ’s no question in popular culture that Star Wars is good . But He - Man is in a different position . I recall it ’s secure to say he ismore a meme than a characterto most the great unwashed . I ’m hoping that that can change with the Netflix show — that it will get some people to at least understand why we screw it when we were kids .

Ugreentracker

io9 : Is there anything else you want to tell masses about the scotch ?

McCreary : Yes , I think it is also deserving refer that this is recorded and performed by a live orchestra and choir . There ’s a tier of acoustic authenticity that I enjoy write for , and it is somewhat rare in the sensitive . I watch a lot of animated series , and some have orchestra and many have an orchestra once in a while . But I really want to see , almost as an experimentation , what it would sound like if I scored an alive show . I just did it the only room I really recognise how to do things , which is with a swelled acoustic strait . I think it will help wreak a level of emotion and realism to the interview that they might not even notice on a conscious grade .

However , even though there ’s a metal ring play with a big bombastic orchestra , I do n’t think of this as a throwback scotch , and I ’m not playing for laugh . I just genuinely cerebrate this go awesome and it ’s a language that can be present-day and cool . I ’m hoping that it kind of rides that line where it ’s fun and it makes you smile , but it also genuinely should get you pump up and genuinely make you sense the stakes and the emotion , and feel them in a innovative fashion .

io9 : Do you have any favored pieces from your grade ?

McCreary : Oh my god . So many . Whenever you enquire a composer what their favorite euphony is , they ’ll commonly say it ’s the thing they ’re working on . And I must say that Revelation ’s finale , installment 10 , is the payoff of every theme that I wrote in every way of life . So my favorite pieces are all in that instalment . bad that you have n’t hear it ! However ! In the first five episodes , there are some wonderful moments and I really delight some of the quieter , unexpected ones . I already mentioned the end credits of instalment one , and the end credit of four have an unexpected outspoken performance by my wife , Raya Yarbrough , who sang the Outlander root . And she ’s singing a melody with lyrics that are a Latin translation of “ By the mogul of Grayskull . ” It ’s nothing brilliant , but it ’s really evocative and beautiful . And I think that there are some other really quiet moments in instalment three and four with Orko ’s dialogue setting .

I ’m citing these not because they ’re the most exciting , not because they ’re even my best euphony , but they are places where , as a dramatist , I had a lot to do and a lot to chip in . And they ’re so unexpected in a show like this , for it to slow the action down and get into some really moving character interactions . In a way , that ’s what I consider take a crap this a large show — not just a great toon , but a majuscule show .
