About 150 people laid off
Upcoming free-to-play shoot-and-looterBorderlands Onlineis no more and and neither is the studio that was working on it. 2K cancelled the game and shut down 2K China.Borderlands Onlinewas originally scheduled to be released in China sometime in 2015.
2K Games confirmed the news toGamesIndustry International. In a statement, 2K said “We determined that the additional time required to finish current projects at the studio, particularlyBorderlands Online, would not yield a favorable return on investment.”
As such, the decision to close 2K China was made. It’s reported that approximately 150 people lost their jobs, although 2K says that it’s attempted to re-position as many within the company as possible.
The closing of 2K China doesn’t indicate that the publisher is giving up on the Asian market. “We are excited about the opportunities to expand our business in Asia, and we remain committed to delivering triple-A offerings for that region,” 2K commented.
