Dan Scanlon , the film ’s director , never gather his founding father — he give out before Scanlon was conduct . “ I sure tell citizenry the story about the mag tape because it ’s an interesting story , ” Scanlon said . “ And I think that ’s a honest standard of measurement of the stories we should tell in our life . Like , what ’s the one you pull out at a dinner party party ? What ’s the one when you ’re really let the cat out of the bag about living that you go , ‘ This is the one ’ ? ”

The duo immediately discover into the idea and began to think about it . At that decimal point though , no one knew what the story would be . car , rats , Pisces , toys , who knew ? All they did bonk was , conceive it was Pixar , it had to have that hallmark emotion .
“ We knew we want to bring the dad back , ” Scanlon suppose . “ I remember talking to a friend of mine , Meg LeFauve , who wrote Inside Out , about how do you contribute the dad back ? And I commemorate say a machine . They could be scientists who build up a machine . Later that day , Meg send me an e - mail that said ‘ salientian rejuvenate . Some frogs have the power to reclaim limbs . ’ She ’s like ‘ Just throw it out there . ’ ”

plain , Onward is n’t about frogs , but that example “ give you an mind of [ how ] sometimes you start from the world and create a story . Sometimes you make a report and observe a globe , ” Scanlon said . “ But in the end , it was like , magic is quixotic , magic is exciting , and that ’s why we ended up here . ”
But even though Scanlon and Rae had landed on an idea , movies at Pixar can transfer . A lot . In the font of Onward , one of the biggest change was which of the two brothers — the younger , nerdier Ian ( voiced by Tom Holland ) or older , tawdry Barley ( voiced by Chris Pratt)—was going to know about illusion .

“ For the long time , Ian was very into magic , ” Scanlon said . “ He wanted to be a superstar more than anything . Barley was kind of apathetic . And it was unvoiced to get behind Ian ’s interest in magic because … we [ the audience ] did n’t know about legerdemain . So you do n’t experience in his shoes . He ’s eff something that you do n’t bed anything about or in full understand . ”
And so , a major 180 had to be convey . “ One of the biggest help was swop them and realizing , ‘ Oh , if your secondary persona is into something you ’d understand , that does n’t count because your main character is learning with the interview . ’ And it makes sense that Ian would want to be like everybody else . He ’s a shy , awkward kid . And then , if anything feel juvenile or silly about the magic , it was funny when it was Barley . ”
One of the other interesting affair that happened during Onward ’s developing was Scanlon and Rae recruited the biggest phantasy rooter at Pixar , nicknamed them “ the Fellowship , ” and got them to vend rich stinger Easter testicle that could be put throughout the picture . It all really feel like we ’re all making them together . ” Scanlon added , “ There really is a gumption of , ‘ Hey , we all kind of have to have film that do well to keep the studio going . ’ And there ’s a trust between all of us . ”
