This was the first “third” game to appear on the program in quite some time, and it offered one of the few VR games that have been provided as part of VR. Now, however, there are many wondering if this was just a one-off or ifMarch 2020’s PS Plus gameswill also include a third VR game, and it very well should. Including VR games every month would be a step-up in the program that could help bolster a successful PS5 launch, as well as bolster sells of the eventual PSVR2.

The Case for VR on PS Plus

VR is something mostly unique to the PS4 as far as consoles are concerned. Xbox has put little, if any, resources into it, asPhil Spencer has stated no one is asking for VR. As such, there’s a bit of a dichotomy in the way the two companies invest: PlayStation sees the potential of VR and puts money into it, whereas Xbox puts its buck on backward compatibility. Next-gen will likely change how the two companies utilize backward compatibility, but the stance on VR will be likely not changed.

This is because there is confirmation that PS5 will support backward compatibility with the PS4, but there are alsoPS5 rumors that PS1, PS2, and PS3 games will be backward compatibletoo. On the other hand, the Xbox Series X has been confirmed to have no support for VR; this means that the PS5 is in a unique position to capture the best of both worlds. Providing VR games via the service will not only showcase its support of VR for those who do enjoy it, but put it more in competition with Xbox’s services come next-gen.

If PS Plus consistently delivered two free PS4 games and a VR game, not only would it support VR as aforementioned, but it would even up that competition. PS Now is seemingly being set up to compete with Game Pass, and while the future of that competition remains to be seen, VR could be PlayStation’s answer to backward compatibility. Now, ifPS Plus on the PS5began offering VR and back-compat games, that would certainly shake it all up.

PSVR2

Other than fostering more healthy competition and showing support for current-gen PSVR, there will eventually be another iteration. Recent reports seemingly indicate that thePSVR2 will release some time after the PS5, likely some time in 2021, but a strong back catalog of free VR games as the concept gets more attention would do well in the long-run as well.
